Magnificent Mallin volley secures Town Women three points in Lancashire
Glen Preston's side edged past Fylde thanks to a second half strike from Kate Mallin
Town Women dealt with bottom of the table Fylde in what ended up being a tighter affair than expected. Despite the home side’s league position, Fylde delivered an admirable performance across the 90 minutes, coming close to scoring more than once, and squashing a foray of Town attacks.
Unfortunately, this win doesn’t propel the Terriers any closer to the all important single promotion spot. In fact, with just four league fixtures still to play, Town sit in fifth, ten points off of first-placed Cheadle. It is not impossible for Town, but it seems very unlikely at this point.
Manager Glen Preston said:
“We have had to play in the moments that we can, but scrap basically. Fight, battle, and scrap. Overall I think we have just about edged the game, I don’t think there was much in it, I thought they played well.
“It was a great goal that won the game. What a volley that was. Superb cross and to be honest with you I was half a second away from shouting ‘HEAD IT!’ But I know what Kate Mallin is like, she will never head a ball in a million years, but she has banged it away with an absolute thunder volley off the underside of the crossbar, and what a way to win the game.”
