Player ratings as another late hammering leaves Huddersfield Town teetering
We've seen this all before: Town put in a limited but just about respectable performance for 70 minutes before completely blowing it late on
Lee Nicholls - 6
Great low fingertip save midway through the first half to deny Jay Fulton. Unable to commit to Jamal Lowe’s strike until too late with a centre-forward threatening to poke it in if he did. Helpless for two later tap-ins and a top-corner curler.
Matty Pearson - 3
Had to bust a gut to get back as Swansea counter-attacked for their second-half opener, but then failed to give Jamal Lowe enough of a challenge to get past him and find the bottom corner. Switched off on the second goal as Carl Rushworth found Josh Tymon’s run into the Town with a long kick forward, allowing him to go clean through into the box before squaring for Ronald to finish.
Michal Helik - 6
Worked hard to get to every dead ball put into box boxes. Nothing he could do about the first two goals, could have been sharper to Liam Walsh for the fourth.
Tom Lees - 7
Stood solid throughout the first half before sparking a bit of concern by going down feeling his recently-injured calf, but emerged to continue in the second half. Pulled up with the same issue again in his desperate but fruitless efforts to get back and put Ronald under pressure to stop the second goal, forcing his withdrawal and another massive defensive crumble from Town.
Brodie Spencer - 7
Got the better of an ongoing battle with Ronald up the Swansea right, looking comfortable with his defensive duties. Still work to do on the ball, which may be why the more attack-minded Jaheim Headley took over on the hour.
Alex Matos - 4
Got caught leaving much too big a space in behind him in midfield at times, but also offered good cover to Pearson on occasion. Sacrificed to allow a change of shape to 4-4-2.
David Kasumu - 7
Often the first Town player to react to the ball going astray, working hard to try and make sure it was won back quickly. More asked of him after the change of shape, but stepped up and twice created openings with his defensive work on the edge of the Swansea box, including when Danny Ward struck the post.
Sorba Thomas - 7
Kept working and working to create opportunities from the right wing and put in several good deliveries that went unfinished (along with some that were less accurate). Hard to ask any more of him, especially without an out-and-out full-back as support.
Jack Rudoni - 6
Started the game really well and was at the centre of all Town’s more promising counter-attacking moves, but found himself less and less able to do that as the first half wore on. Constantly working way off the ball to try and starve Swansea of time and space. Had to pick his moments a bit more on and off the ball after dropping back into a number 8 role.
Josh Koroma - 4
Not really his day, dragging a half-chance wide after doing well to fashion it in the first half, then blazing a great chance some way off target off a good Thomas cross midway through the second period.
Delano Burgzorg - 3
After a few more positive outings, we’re back to this Delano Burgzorg. Needed to gamble on Thomas winning the ball as he got to the byline to cross on a first-half counter; failure to do so meant he was not in place to finish off the winger’s ball. Nearly caught Swansea keeper Carl Rushworth out with a couple of chargedowns, one of which gave him the chance to square to either Koroma or Rudoni for a simple finish, by selfishly took on a far more difficult shot for himself and inevitably had it blocked. Unsurprisingly, Andre Breitenreiter told Rhys Healey and Danny Ward to get ready immediately after.
Substitutes
Danny Ward (for Burgzorg 60) - Couldn’t believe his eyes as his well-struck effort hit the inside of the post and curled out for a goal kick in the other direction. So unlucky. 6
Jaheim Headley (for Spencer 60) - Offered Town a bit of a different dimension on the left flank, but rarely used with most of their attacks going up the other side. Unconvincing with his work on Swansea’s third. 4
Rhys Healey (for Matos 61) - Partnered Ward up top. Put himself about well but wasn’t given much in the way of opportunities. Went close as he tried to pull back a consolation goal, but curled narrowly over the bar. 5
Ben Jackson (for Lees 88) - n/a
Unused substitutes: Chris Maxwell, Tom Edwards, Ollie Turton, Ben Wiles, Bojan Radulovic.
