Scouting report: West Ham striker Callum Marshall joins Huddersfield Town
The Northern Ireland international has arrived on a season-long loan
Huddersfield Town have announced West Ham United striker Callum Marshall as their fifth signing of the summer. The 19-year-old joins the club on a season-long loan and will wear the number 7 shirt.
The Northern Ireland international is highly-regarded at the London Stadium and made his senior debut in the FA Cup earlier this year before going out for a short loan spell at West Bromwich Albion, appearing in three Championship games.
Marshall’s eligibility to face Peterborough United in Saturday evening’s League One opener will depend on whether or not he was registered with the EFL before Friday’s noon deadline.
Linfield academy product Marshall has earned four caps for his country. He thought he had scored a potentially vital equaliser on his debut against Denmark in Northern Ireland’s Euro 2024 qualification campaign, but the goal was ruled out for an offside against Jonny Evans in the build-up.
Marshall joins Lasse Sorensen, Mickel Miller, Herbie Kane and Antony Evans as new arrivals at the John Smith’s Stadium this summer.
Town head coach Michael Duff said: “Callum is a player with clear talent and potential, and I’m looking forward to working with him.
“He’s an international teammate of Brodie Spencer and it’s clear from our talks that he shares a lot of his good characteristics; he’s very hard-working on the pitch, and he’s really driven to come here and score goals.
“I think he will really suit the style we want to play too, particularly as part of a front two. It adds another set of qualities to our forward options, which is exactly what you want as a head coach.”
Sporting director Mark Cartwright added: “We’re delighted to welcome Callum to the club today.
“The loan market involving Premier League clubs and players has been slow so far in this window as they rightly take stock of how their players return from international competitions, but this opportunity has moved quickly over the last 48 hours and I’d like to thank everyone at West Ham United for the faith they have shown in us to look after one of their best prospects.
“We’ve been very clear about our desire to add to our forward options this summer, and Callum’s arrival on loan is an important piece of that puzzle. He has a prolific scoring record in Premier League 2 and the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, and we believe that can translate to first team football.”
Marshall said: “I’m happy to get this over the line; I can’t wait for the season to start.
“The aim is to show that I can do it in men’s football; that’s why I’ve come here. I know the club wants to be back in the Championship and there are expectations for us to challenge – hopefully we can deliver on it.
“I will always work hard for the team. Hopefully I can score a few goals and make a name for myself here!”
Callum Marshall scouting report
A left-footed centre-forward who can play centrally or out wide, Marshall has a prolific goalscoring record at youth level: he scored 18 goals in 14 appearances in Premier League 2.
More encouraging, perhaps, is Marshall’s record in the EFL trophy against some of the sides Town will be playing in the upcoming campaign. Turning out for West Ham’s under-21s side, Marshall contributed three goals and two assists in four appearances, including a brace against Bristol Rovers.
