Ten to go: What Huddersfield Town need to do to make it into the play-offs
A top-six place and a shot at Wembley await — if the Terriers can get through their hardest run of games first
There are just ten games left in the League One season for Huddersfield Town and most of their fellow promotion contenders, and it’s all still to play for as the Terriers bid for a top six finish.
Liam Manning’s side are just about on course to achieve that goal based on the current league table — ignoring Stevenage’s pesky game in hand — but they have a daunting run of fixtures to get through if they hope to make it to Wembley and the Championship.
Let’s take a look at how things stand, the points total Town are likely to need for a top-six finish, and how the fixtures shake out for them in comparison with their rivals. They’re not the only ones with a tough fixture list, as it turns out…
The state of play
Bar some kind of calamity, Lincoln and Cardiff are well on course to scoop the two automatic promotion places. That said, the Bluebirds have had a bit of a wobble in recent weeks, while third-placed Bolton haven’t lost in 11, so never say never.
Still, all that is realistically left to play for is the four play-off places. Bolton and Bradford have a commanding position at this point, and Stockport could consolidate as well, if they make the most of their two games in hand.
As we’ve seen this week, though, games in hand shouldn’t be taken for granted as automatic victories. Even so, for reasons we’ll come onto shortly, we do expect Stockport to get the job done.
If things go to form, then, there might only end up being one remaining play-off place left for Town to claim. For the time being, they are leading the race for that spot, but can we expect them to emerge victorious, and what would they need to do?
How many points are likely to be required to finish in the top six?
