This game possessed everything that you want from a local derby. Two teams wanting to play an offensive style of football, physical battles all over the pitch, and of course… goals.
The result was in Town’s favour at the alternate fixture with goals coming from defender Beth Ibbotson and winger Molly Firth in the game all the way back in August. However, this time for Town it was their striker, number nine, and latest arrival to the club, Katie Astle who bagged a first half brace against the team she supports, securing the all important three points. The result now puts the Terriers level on points with Leeds United, sitting joint fourth in the league table.
Manager Glen Preston said:
“It was a scrappy game to be honest with you, but they are always likely to be when they are derbies because you have got that little more edge to the game.
“I felt both sides looked a little bit nervous at times, a little bit direct, which made it difficult to play good football. Both sides are good in the press, so it is hard to also build in your own third.
“We have come out with the right result, and ultimately I don’t think that Leeds have probably caused us too many problems over the 90 minutes, so it’s a pleasing performance.
“Katie was fantastic. Strikers always need goals but to score against the club that you recently played for and support, hopefully she will enjoy this moment.
