With just two games to go, Huddersfield Town have only slim hopes of surviving the drop to League One.

Where has it all gone wrong? Pretty much everywhere, in truth, with the issues first making themselves apparent last summer and only piling up more and more as the season has gone on.

We’ve trawled back through the season with a fine-toothed comb to find the factors behind another miserable season.

Fitness and late goals conceded

Probably Town’s biggest issue this season, and so self-evident that it’s barely worth dwelling on – but the simple fact is that Town just don’t have enough players who have been capable of doing 90 minutes capably this season.

25 different players have started in at least three Championship games for Town over the campaign. Only ten of them have lasted the full 90 minutes in at least two-thirds of their appearances. Sorba Thomas and Jack Rudoni are the only two of those ten who are not defenders or goalkeepers.

This has contributed to (but as we will come to in a moment, is not the sole reason for) a deluge of late goals against Town.

Only Millwall (28) have dropped more points from winning positions than Town (27), and the vast majority of Town’s dropped points (23) have been squandered by conceding in the last 20 minutes of games.

No other Championship side has conceded as many goals in the last 10 minutes of games plus stoppage time (18), and no other side has conceded as many second-half goals (48).
