Alfie May will spend the 2026/27 campaign on loan at Doncaster Rovers.

The forward penned a three-year deal at Huddersfield Town when they signed him from Birmingham City last year.

That move came one year on from a failed bid to secure May’s signature from Charlton, where he had been League One’s top scorer in 2023/24.

However, May has struggled to find his best form at the Accu Stadium, contributing seven goals and seven assists in 40 appearances in all competitions last season.

News of Ashley Fletcher’s signing from Blackpool last week cast further doubt on the futures of May and fellow striker Joe Taylor, who was sent on loan to Wigan in the January transfer window.

Fletcher’s arrival effectively confirmed that Town had taken note of how much more convincingly the side performed with Bojan Radulovic up front last season, and are looking to replicate that profile in their striking options next season rather than lean further into what May can offer.

This will be May’s second spell at Doncaster, where he spent two and a half seasons from 2017 to 2020 before departing for Cheltenham Town.

Town sporting director Chris Markham said in a club statement: “A move that possesses the best interests of all involved, both Alfie and Doncaster’s appetite to see an agreement reached was made clear early on, and the terms of the loan are in line with our expectations ahead of the new season.

“Giving both Alfie and the club some clarity early in the summer now allows us greater flexibility in the remainder of the window to come, and we can continue to work toward shaping our men’s first team to allow Martin [Drury[ the tools he desires to play the football we’re all desperate to see.

“A traditional loan agreement, Alfie remains a Town player and we wholeheartedly wish him nothing but the best with Doncaster in the season to come. As we do with all of our loanees, we’ll be keeping close to him and watching on to see how he’s performing with his loan side.”

Head coach Drury added: “I join everyone at the club in wishing Alfie the very best of luck for the season ahead with Doncaster Rovers, and I’m pleased we’ve reached an agreement that works for all concerned.”

David Hartrick and I spoke on this week’s podcast about how Fletcher’s signing might impact Taylor and May. It hasn’t taken long for our suspicions to come to pass.
