Huddersfield Town player ratings as unbeaten league run ended by Bolton
Aaron Collins' second half goal gave the visitors a one-goal victory as the Terriers failed to impress
Five conclusions on this game are here for our lovely backers - get in on it.
Jacob Chapman - 6
Pulled off a spectacular save on ten minutes, and wasn’t to know Aaron Collins was offside as he unleashed his header. Got a touch on the ball as Collins rounded him soon after the break, but not enough to take the ball away from the Bolton striker, allowing him to slot home. Did well to stop a later one v one, denying Randall after coming off his line.
Matty Pearson - 5
Had some issues in the first ten minutes or so, in common with the rest of the Town side, but like his colleagues settled into the game. Got forward well up the right to help Town gain numbers in attack but didn’t have the quality to provide the final ball. Did what he could to try and snuff out the Bolton attack that led to Aaron Collins’ goal, but ultimately unable to scramble it off the line.
Tom Lees - 5
Looked overwhelmed in the opening minutes and improved from there defensively. Continues to frustrate with his ponderous work on the ball when chasing a goal against a low block. Looked frustrated himself, come to that. Didn’t read the situation right for the Bolton goal, stepping towards the ball instead of covering the man.
Radinio Balker - 7
Got his first start of the season and looked impressive. Breezed past opponents with ease and showed off his forward passing variety. Was however caught out of position by overcommitting to an attempt to nip in and win an early challenge - his teammates had plenty of opportunities to stop it from there, though.
Ollie Turton - 6
Put in a respectable shift and did particularly well to deal with a Bolton counter-attack off a corner in the first half. Went off for the more attack-minded and returning Lasse Sorensen for the final 30 minutes.
Ben Wiles - 5
Injured just less than half an hour in after being accidentally stepped on by an opponent while trying to win a loose ball. Played on for a few more minutes but clearly wasn’t right and was replaced.
Jonathan Hogg - 5
Shared his last start with Evans: against Barnsley in the EFL Trophy in October. Played as the lone defensive midfielder, which (nothing against Hogg) you know our feelings about. Had some clumsy touches in the opening stages but settled in and played some promising early balls looking for Dion Charles’ runs. Went off for Joe Hodge late on.
Antony Evans - 4
Into the starting line-up for the first time since October. Bright enough start but once again started to look desperate as the game turned against Town, particularly after going a goal down - really awful at times. Took over set piece duties from Wiles, as he has in the past few games, and is yet to really vindicate that decision with his deliveries.
Brodie Spencer - 7
Started at left wing-back before taking over from Balker for the final stages. One of Town’s better players in a cagey first half before taking a back seat to supposedly more creative players after the break. Excellent tackle late on to deny Bolton a big chance and had a decent-looking penalty shout waved away in the final minute.
Dion Charles - 5
Chased well to try and get onto balls over the top or win it off opponents in the first half. Quieter after the break as Bolton increasingly looked to just frustrate Town and see out their lead.
Joe Taylor - 4
Showed some absolutely lovely touches and clearly had the pace to get in behind if Town could just find the right ball for him. Went off in a planned sub ont he hour having had an ultimately pretty anonymous showing.
Substitutes
Herbie Kane (for Wiles 36) - Bright start to the second half. Had a couple of volleys from half-cleared set pieces but had one deflected out and put another narrowly wide. Gave the ball away to allow Bolton a one-on-one with Chapman that the keeper thankfully saved. 5
Lasse Sorensen (for Turton 60) - Another comeback attempt from his extended hamstring injury. Was almost immediately clattered in an aerial challenge but straight back up to defend himself. Had a golden chance to either finish or put the ball back across the box with the final kick of the game, but instead put a tame touch straight at the keeper. 6
Callum Marshall (for Taylor 60) - Produced a shot from a narrow angle with ten minutes to go that finally forced a decent save out of Bolton keeper Luke Southwood. Eked a deflected effort narrowly wide. 6
Josh Koroma (for Balker 70) - On at left wing-back. 5
Joe Hodge (for Hogg 70) - Lovely ball to produce that Marshall chance. 5
Unused substitutes: Lee Nicholls, Rhys Healey.
