Mickel Miller scouting report as wing-back arrives at Huddersfield Town
Huddersfield Town have snapped up the Plymouth Argyle wide-man as a free agent
Huddersfield Town have announced Plymouth Argyle wing-back Mickel Miller as their second first-team signing of the summer.
Miller has taken the step down from the Championship despite being offered a new deal at Plymouth and being linked with several other second-tier clubs.
Mirroring fellow new boy Lasse Sorensen, Miller gives Michael Duff an attack-minded option to play on the left in a variety of wide roles, predominantly at wing-back.
The Town head coach said in a club statement: “Having coached against Mickel in the past, I know what a handful he can be going forward, but his diligence defensively is something that I find really impressive, too.
“Introducing players right at the start of pre-season gives the squad a real sense of refreshment and excitement, increasing competition for places and intensity in training right from the off. Having already enjoyed our sessions out on the grass, Mickel will again help raise that level.”
Sporting director Mark Cartwright added: “Mickel has been an player in demand this summer, so we’re really pleased that he’s bought into our ambition and chosen to join us ahead of the 2024/25 season.
“Someone we identified early on as having all of the tools and characteristics we wanted to introduce to the squad, his knowledge of this division and previous performances at not only his level but higher gives us real confidence.”
Miller himself said: “I’m really happy to be a Huddersfield Town player, and it didn’t take long for me to decide that this was the club I wanted to join this summer, despite other offers.
“Speaking to the sporting director and head coach showed me how much Town want to achieve, and that felt like something I wanted to be part of. I’m an ambitious person and the club shares that, which gives you a good feeling straight away.
“I’m looking forward to working hard, enjoying an exciting season with my new team and getting to know our supporters better at the John Smith’s Stadium.”
Mickel Miller career to date
A product of non-league side Carshalton Athletic, 28-year-old Miller started out playing in the seventh and eighth tiers of English football as a prolific goalscoring winger before making the big step up to to the Scottish Premiership with Hamilton Academical.
Miller was able to establish himself as a first-team player north of the border, and after three years took up the offer of a Championship move to (appropriately) Rotherham United.
After half a season on loan with League One Northampton, Miller made 23 appearances in an injury-hit season to help the newly-relegated Millers earn promotion straight back to to the Championship.
He was released by Rotherham that summer, however, and went to Plymouth to repeat the trick — and although his appearances in their League One promotion-winning side were again limited by injury, he found both form and fitness last season, ending with 34 appearances in all competitions.
Mickel Miller scouting report
Miller played 34 Championship games for Plymouth last season, 19 of them starts. He was offered a new deal to remain at Home Park but has instead opted to move to Town.
Defensively, Miller’s numbers for the last Championship campaign are unremarkable: no real red flags (besides picking up a high number of yellow cards — 12 in total), but nothing stands out as exceptional either.
Unsurprisingly for a player who starter as a winger, Miller’s standout strengths are in his attacking abilities. Given Duff’s preference for playing with wing-backs, this is likely what convinced Town to pursue his signature.
