Scouting report as Huddersfield Town confirm return of Millwall defender Murray Wallace
The experienced defender is coming back to the John Smith's Stadium
Murray Wallace has been announced as Huddersfield Town's sixth signing of the summer transfer window.
The 32 year old will return to the club on a two-year deal following his release from Championship side Millwall, whom he has represented since 2018.
Wallace joins midfielder Ryan Ledson, winger Marcus Harness, and fellow defenders Joe Low, Sean Roughan and Josh Feeney in arriving at Town this summer.
Terriers manager Lee Grant said in a club statement: “We’re really pleased to have Murray join our evolving defensive unit, and it’s especially pleasing that he’s another new face that will be alongside us from day one of pre-season later this week.
“A committed defender who clearly knows what it means to represent the club already, the experience and leadership qualities he possesses are also going to be an asset for us. Having introduced a number of younger defenders into the side already this summer as we continue to maximise potential and invest in the future of our squad, Murray’s voice will be key both at the back and in the dressing room.
“Another versatile player who’s comfortable in multiple roles across the back, Murray continues to allow us to be tactically flexible and adaptable, which is important ahead of a long season to come and different styles of opponent to face.”
Wallace added: “It’s a brilliant feeling to be back at the club, and it was an easy decision to return once I became aware of the interest.
“It feels a like a bit of a full circle moment having left almost a decade ago, and there’s a real excitement around the club this summer for the season to come and that’s something I wanted to contribute to and be part of.
“Every discussion I had with manager Lee Grant was incredibly positive, and the clarity and confidence he had about the way he wanted us to play was a huge appeal.
“I know how important and passionate the supporters are here, and I’m looking forward to being back out there playing for them again soon.”
Scouting report and Millwall expert view
Most Town fans will, of course, remember Wallace from his first stint at the club from 2012-2016
The Scot has been signed to provide experience in defence. The oldest defender already on the books is 26-year-old Radinio Balker, while new signings Joe Low (23), Sean Roughan (22) and Josh Feeney (20) are all on the more junior end of the scale.
Wallace’s professionalism is reputedly excellent, which should be useful in a dressing room that now skews younger than it did following the departures of players such as Matty Pearson, Tom Lees and Jonathan Hogg.
