Huddersfield Town sell Jack Rudoni to Coventry City
The midfielder will remain a Championship player following the Terriers' relegation to League One
Jack Rudoni has departed Huddersfield Town to join Championship side Coventry City in the club’s first sale of the summer transfer window.
The midfielder signed from Wimbledon in the summer of 2022. Ever-present in his first campaign for the Terriers, he continued to play an important role last season.
However, Town were expected to lose players this summer following their relegation to League One, with Rudoni becoming the first high-profile departure since their retained list was released last month.
Rudoni celebrated his 23rd birthday last week, with Coventry likely to have been attracted by his potential to develop further having shown off his stamina, work rate and ball-carrying abilities in the Championship over the past two years.
The midfielder was a regular goalscorer for Wimbledon in League One but was never able to carry that over to his spell at Town, missing numerous presentable opportunities last season — but if he can rediscover his touch in front of goal he could be a solid replacement for the departing Callum O’Hare.
Rudoni has moved for an undisclosed fee, reported to be in the region of £5m. We Are Terriers understands that the club are not willing to accept less than their asking price for any outgoings this summer. It would appear that Coventry have met that valuation with Rudoni.
Sporting director Mark Cartwright had previously indicated that Town did not have to sell players to bring new ones in this summer, but acknowledged they might reach a point where it became one in, one out. Rudoni’s departure at this early stage of the transfer window may therefore relieve at least some of the need for Town to wait to make moves later in the window.
Cartwright said in the club statement announcing Rudoni’s departure: “Jack’s desire to continue testing himself within the Sky Bet Championship wasn’t a surprise to us, but alongside Michael, we were determined to only sanction his departure once the right deal had been agreed for the club.
“Reaching an agreement at the start of the window gives us focus within the remainder of the market, whilst also giving our existing squad further incentive to hit the ground running when they return for pre-season with a place in the side to fight for under our new head coach.
“On behalf of all at the club, we wish Jack all the best and thank for him for his efforts with us.”
Michael Duff added: “A move that suits all parties, we’ve been clear that if anyone is to leave the Club the deal would only be authorised under the right circumstances for Huddersfield Town.
“While we haven’t worked together it’s clear that Jack has real potential, and I wish him well in his future career. His departure now creates opportunity for others which I find exciting, and my full focus is on getting to work with the squad when they return for pre-season next week.”
As it stands, Town’s remaining midfield options include captain Jonathan Hogg (who signed a new one-year contract last week), David Kasumu, Ben Wiles, Scott High, Josh Austerfield and Tom Iorpenda.
Lasse Sorensen arrived on Tuesday as Town’s first new signing, with the right wing-back coming in from third-tier rivals Lincoln City. You can read our scouting report on him here.
